Memory Line

Memory Line is a multimedia artwork reflecting on the techniques used for memory storage during the early days of digital computing, listening to the testimonies of those who experienced the first programmable memory machine. The short documentary film features three women who are veterans of EDSAC remembering their time working with the machine, alongside volunteers currently building a replica of EDSAC at The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park. EDSAC was one of the first digital computers built with a programmable memory: using tubes of mercury, it stored bits of data by sending ultrasonic pulses through the tubes in a memory feedback loop — its memories were literally soundwaves.
